In 1969, in response to Canadian and US competition, a consortium of four Québec wholesalers was merged to save costs and create services like a large company. One of them was Antoine Turmel, who was the first CEO of Provigo. Provigo was founded in 1969 under the name of Couvrette and Provost, which was changed to Provigo in 1970.
Originally, Provigo was the only name it received, with three ads for its grocery products, Provigain, Provibec and Provipop. Until 1979, the replacement of the Provigain chain with its own Provigo name was not a real registered trademark. Her sister Provibec was renamed AXEP in 1983.
